The past several weeks here in Djibouti have been OBE for me and mine.
OBE = Overcome By Events
29JAN12 I live on a camp in east Africa that is built on the remnants of French army base. There is building and moving going on at any given day or hour. We are launching air craft daily as part of our mission.
So basically I live on a construction site next to the airport. In a container. Next to hundred of other containers.
Glamorous living, huh?
Camp Lemonnier is fundamentally a diving board. It is from here that you jump into the pool that is the continent of Africa.
I have been behind in writing – life has been all over the map for the last two weeks. No one told me when I was being deployed that I would spend half of my time in my clerics and coordinating charity and outreach projects.
So, there I was, driving back from the cathedral after an Advent penance service and was coming up on the entrance to the camp. As I came over the last ridge in the road, I came upon three dozen camels wandering in and around the road. I hit the brakes and then waited to wade through these pack animals. We are not in Kansas anymore.
