Bishops - Broglio

Washington D.C., Feb 15, 2013 /(CNA/EWTN News).- Two U.S. archbishops involved in defense of marriage efforts and the military spoke out against a new Pentagon policy giving gay couples many of the benefits of military spouses.

“This new policy under the guise of 'equal benefits' undermines marriage as the union of one man and one woman because it treats two persons of the same sex as spouses,” said Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio of the U.S. Archdiocese for the Military Services.

In a statement released by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on Feb. 15, Archbishop Broglio voiced concern over a new military policy treating same-sex partners as if they were married.

Archbishop Timothy Broglio of the Archdiocese of the Military Services delivered this homily at the Sept. 4 (2012) memorial Mass for Servant of God Father Vincent Capodanno at the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. A Maryknoll missionary, military chaplain and U.S. Navy lieutenant, Father Capodanno was killed in Vietnam on Sept. 4, 1967, while ministering to wounded and dying Marines of the 1st Marine Division. He posthumously received the Medal of Honor, and, in 2006, the Catholic Church officially proclaimed him a "Servant of God"; his story is the subject of The Grunt Padre by Father Daniel Mode........
WASHINGTON, DC 04Sept2012: A few weeks ago there was a special program dedicated to the late Father Vincent Capodanno. For the most part, those who spoke had been Marines who served with him, including those with him when he was killed by enemy fire. It was impressive to listen to their testimony and to hear their tributes to a priest who gave his all — both in life and in death — for those he was called to serve.

Religious faith is seen by some people as poisonous to good citizenship. One’s religious beliefs are expected to be kept private if they are not in conformity with the secularist mindset. Matters such as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ mandate are seen as demands to which any good citizen would acquiesce.
Archbishop Timothy Broglio could not disagree more.

Washington D.C., Feb 7, 2012 (CNA/EWTN News)- The archbishop who oversees American Catholic military chaplains worldwide claims the U.S. Army violated his rights by stifling a pastoral letter condemning the Obama administration's contraception mandate.

What the World Needs Now

My frustration as the brigade chaplain – it’s my responsibility to see all denominations cared for. It’s more and more difficult to see how few Catholic priests, for example, are in the military. It’s very difficult to supply what the Soldiers need. We need Catholic priests...
